Staying in Your Lane: Understanding Professional Boundaries in Alumni Relations

Abstract

As alumni professionals, your role bridges the space between clinical care and community support—making it uniquely rewarding but also complex. In this interactive workshop, we’ll explore how to clearly define and maintain appropriate professional boundaries with alumni while still providing compassionate, effective support.

We’ll unpack real-world questions:

Is it okay to drive an alumnus to an event?

Should I respond to a late-night crisis call?

What’s my role if a support group starts diving into trauma or clinical issues?

How do I collaborate with clinical teams when someone may need to return to treatment”

You’ll learn to recognize where your scope begins and ends, how to set boundaries that protect both you and the alumni you serve, and how to respond when lines start to blur. We’ll also identify warning signs of boundary oversteps, emotional burnout, and role confusion—and the proactive steps to prevent them.
